It has been known for some time triptans taken with certain serotonin inhibators like Paxal and Zoloft could cause Serotonin Syndrome,a rare but potentially fatal drug interaction.In the May 15 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine is the first information triptans on their own have been linked to the disorder.There are 11 cases of Serotonin Syndrome that were reported to the FDA,with the use of triptans alone.These are detailed by the FDA and researchers from Georgetown University in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Those with this syndrome associate only with triptan therapy average age was 39.9years old.The study found most common symptoms were high blood pressure,tremor,palpitaitions ,agitation.Two cases were "life-threatening."A total of five people required hospitaliztion.Four of the 11 were cleared.
I find this news extremely important and do not understand why it's not all over the news.It scares the crap out of me....I'm taking a copy of the orignal article to my doctor and I am going to ask her to post it,maybe I'll make a couple of extra copies and see if she'll post them in the lobby.
