The ER Triggered My Migraine Attack!!
August 21st 2009 01:14
Two days ago, I went to the ER because I could not stand the pain in my right arm any longer. For over a month it had been getting worse.
Back in February, I did bump my upper right arm really hard on a door frame when I lost my balance. It bothered me for awhile, but then felt fine.
I do not have health insurance now, thanks to the insurance co.
Anyway, I went to the ER to get it checked out and I had heard other people had something similar and gotten a shot in the muscle, which is where the pain was.
The doctor was very rude, short with me. All he did was move my arm up and down. Said it was hard to treat me without insurance, calling it chronic pain. That he could prescribe me some meds. I told him I should have known better and not have come there for help. He said, maybe I shouldn't have.
I stormed out, went over to the desk in the cubicle with the man who I had signed for the $$ papers. I told him not to bill me, that I wasn't being treated properly because I didn't have insurance. He was going to get someone to talk to me.
Then, there were 2 nurses that appeared. One sat right in front of me,loudly telling me to calm down. She was in my face. My head pain shot up so fast,I stood up,needed to sit down on the floor, against the cubicle wall.I kept saying my head! The man behind the desk told them I had said to him I had migraines. The nurse was in my face telling me to get up.
I could hear, but not respond. She started pulling me up by my arms,I felt another set of arms pulling my arms.I yelled out in pain, the man behind the desk said that was the arm I was there for.The loud nurse said they had to get me in a wheelchair. Then someone pulled at the waist of my pants, while the others pulled me by my arms.
I could feel I was in the wheelchair, slipped right out, pulled up again, plopped in the chair,it snapped me to...I yelled for my daughter, who had brought me there.
In the end,I got a shot for the migraine and a couple of pills. The nursing supervisor talked to me only about the doctor.
I had nightmares all night. I felt violated. I felt like I was treated like a criminal. And I feel like they put my health very much at risk!
That will teach me to go to the er!

So, I want to add something here. I now know that no matter What I go to the er to be treated for, Always take someone back with me. I didn't want my daughter back there because she is pregnant. Her boyfriend is very uncomfortable because his mom has been in hospitals alot due to cancer, so I didn't want to ask him.
But. My advice, as I've given to migraineurs is to always have someone with you, many times you cannot speak for yourself. Now I know, you need a witness, you need someone to back you up.
Lesson learned and will not be forgotten.
